Haninum Tyk Rhinann
The Last JediHaninum Tyk Rhinann’s brief but consequential role is defined by two legacies: he died trying to kill Darth Vader, and he passed a Sith Holocron to Jax Pavan. His death was confirmed; Vader’s disappearance was not. That imbalance made Rhinann’s failed attack a turning point in Jax’s understanding of his nemesis, while the Holocron carried Rhinann’s influence forward into a later and more intimate danger.
Identity and Role
Rhinann was associated with Jax Pavan’s Whiplash team and was remembered as the would-be assassin who confronted Vader. The available account gives little about his background or personal motives. It does establish the stakes of his action: he tried to kill the Dark Lord during a confrontation in which Vader, under the influence of a potent drug that unpredictably enhanced Force abilities, lashed out with overwhelming energy.
Jax’s recollection places Rhinann’s attempt within a disastrous encounter. A member of the Whiplash team had betrayed the group, and Rhinann was the one who made the attempt on Vader’s life. The precise circumstances of the betrayal and Rhinann’s motives are not specified, but the attack became inseparable from the question of whether Vader had survived it.
Attack and Death
Rhinann pushed Vader over the edge, in more than one sense: the confrontation culminated in both men falling a great distance. The release of energy from Vader was enough to vaporize Rhinann, whose death Jax regarded as certain. The episode is also described as Rhinann having self-immolated in an attempt to assassinate Vader, but the more detailed account attributes his destruction to Vader’s uncontrolled release of power.
Vader, by contrast, vanished. In the months after the encounter, Jax and his companions heard no reports, rumors, or speculation about the Dark Lord’s whereabouts or condition. Jax could not accept that the apparently perfect sequence of events meant Vader was dead. Rhinann’s confirmed death beside Vader’s unexplained disappearance turned the attack into an unresolved defeat: the assassin had perished, but the target’s fate remained unknown.
The Sith Holocron
Rhinann’s other lasting connection to Jax was the Sith Holocron Jax received from him. Jax associated the artifact with the pyronium Anakin had entrusted to his care: the gem was said to hold unimaginable power, and the secret for calling that power forth was believed to be revealed in the Holocron. Rhinann’s gift therefore placed a possible key to the gem’s power in Jax’s possession, though the account leaves the claim about that power unverified.
The Holocron’s provenance is presented through more than one association. Jax recalled receiving it from Rhinann and knew that his father, Lorn Pavan, had once tried to acquire it; elsewhere, he counted the artifact among the possessions his father had bequeathed to him. Whatever the exact chain of possession, the object remained with Jax. He had not tried to open it: Sith Holocrons were rare and powerful, reputed to assault an unprepared Jedi’s reason with dark knowledge, and this one produced a subtle disturbance in the Force that Jax could feel when near it.
Consequence and Narrative Significance
Rhinann’s two legacies pull in opposite directions. His attack ends in sudden, certain death, yet it fails to provide certainty about Vader; his Holocron, meanwhile, survives him as an unopened source of knowledge and risk. Jax’s reluctance to activate it reflects the artifact’s danger, while his fractured concentration further weakens his capacity to confront it. Rhinann thus remains consequential beyond his brief appearance: his failed assassination leaves Jax watching for a vanished enemy, and his gift leaves that same Jedi carrying a dark object whose promised power he has not dared to test.
